Imagine twenty 5-foot tall gingerbread men “marching” along the West Promenade of Canada Place – and then imagine each one coming to life with its own unique personality! This was the scene at the Christmas at Canada Place festival over the holiday season, along with the beloved Woodward’s window displays and visits from Santa Claus. Local companies and organizations were invited to sponsor and decorate a 5-foot foam gingerbread man which would then be displayed throughout the holidays.
Omicron was very excited to participate in the first annual Gingerbread Men’s March with our theme “Helping Build Knowledge One Book at a Time”. In the spirit of the season, we decided to use our decorating dollars to purchase books for a downtown eastside school instead of purchasing decorations for our display. Covers from the books were copied and used to build a suit for our gingerbread man, and finishing touches of giant books, glasses, scarf and cap were added.
It was a very close race for this year’s People’s Choice Award at the event. First place went to CKNW’s entry decorated by the Girl Guides of Canada. The blue-eyed, smiling Girl Guide won the hearts and votes of event goers. Second place was a tie between Omicron and Waterfront Centre’s display with sparkling Christmas baubles and miniature gingerbread men.
Christmas at Canada Place is an annual festive season event with proceeds going to support charitable organizations in the Lower Mainland including the "Food Security for Children" program at the Strathcona Community Centre. This crucial program ensures kids on the downtown eastside are fed year-round in a safe, protective and caring environment.
